Spirit Lake Daylilies
Spring, 2009
Spirit Lake Daylilies /DBA Spirit Lake Gardens is a home-based, state inspected, family owned and operated specialty Hemerocallis (Daylily) nursery located on Spirit Lake near Frederic, Wisconsin, in the northwest corner of the state. We sell retail bare-root plants by mail-order catalog. We live in cold USDA Zone 3, and our uncoddled, field-grown plants are totally hardy here. If they won’t grow for us, we won’t sell them to you! We also give Bonus Plants worth 20% of your plant total. Our gardens are open by appointment only; if you wish to pay us a visit, please call in advance.
Open House
Spirit Lake Daylilies is primarily a mail-order purveyor of daylilies, but on one fine day in the summer we invite all of our daylily-loving friends to come to an Open House held here at our 4th-Generation farm on the shores of Spirit Lake.
In 2009, our Open House will be on Saturday, July 25th from 8 AM until 5 PM. You are invited to come to the daylily field and walk among the gorgeous blooms. You can purchase available daylilies and they will be freshly dug on the spot while you sip a cool drink. Refreshments and treats will be served under our covered seating area. Drawings for Daylily Door Prizes will be held throughout the day. The event will be held rain or shine. Please call for directions.

About Daylilies:
Daylilies are rugged and dependable perennials that are low maintenance, provide lots of color in the landscape, and are very rewarding for the homeowner to grow. There are over 60,000 different cultivars at this time, and they come in all sizes, shapes and colors. By selecting daylilies that bloom at different times and with rebloom, you can have daylily color in your garden all season long!
Care:
Daylilies are very low maintenance, but you will get better bloom performance with just a few simple tasks. An application of a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) in the spring will encourage more blooms and vigorous growth, as will an annual addition of compost around them. Mulching around the plants helps eliminate weeds and conserves moisture. Deadheading (snapping off spent blooms) will prevent seed formation which can slow growth or lessen blooms the next year. Clean up the old bloom stalks and dead leaves after a killing frost in the fall. You should dig and divide your daylilies every 4-5 years to keep the clump vigorous and blooming well. You can either replant the excess plants in your own garden, or become very popular by giving them away to friends!
Culture:
Daylilies like full sun. They will tolerate light shade, but need at least 6 hours of sun to flower well. They like soils that are moist and well-drained. Daylilies perform best with at least an inch of water per week, but will tolerate drought once established. Daylilies are not usually prone to insect infestations, but if aphids or thrips become a problem, a spray with insecticidal soap is usually all that is necessary. Some dark red or purple daylilies look fresher if they get some afternoon shade.
Planting:
Plant your daylilies as soon after you get your shipment as you can. Before planting, soak them for an hour or so to recover moisture lost during shipment. If you cannot get to them for a day or so, place the roots in a bucket of water in the shade so they don’t dry out. Dig the hole large enough to spread out the roots in it completely. Make a mound of dirt in the center of the hole and place the crown (where the roots and foliage meet) on it, then fan out the roots. Make sure the crown is just at the surface of the dirt after it’s covered. I usually water them with a Miracle Grow ™ fertilizer solution at this point and let the water sink in. Then I cover the plants with soil and water again. Put some mulch around the plant (but not touching it) for weed and moisture retention, and you’ll be all set. Keep the soil moist until you see good new growth. Plant daylilies at least a foot apart so they have plenty of room to grow. Plants give greater impact if they are planted in groups of 3-5 or more plants.
